Common Reasons the Check Engine Light Turns On
If your check engine light flashes on, it doesn't automatically mean that your engine is about to go kaput. Nonetheless, it's still best to get to the shop for diagnostics so that any developing problems can be addressed before they get worse and require repairs that are more expensive than should've been necessary. At A-1 Automotive, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and fixing problems that trigger the check engine light. Come and see us for computerized diagnostics when your check engine light illuminates.
What is triggering my check engine light?
Faulty catalytic converters are often to blame when the check engine light comes on. Symptoms of catalytic converter trouble include worsening gas mileage, poor acceleration, and a smell like rotten eggs. To ensure that your vehicle isn't creating excessive pollution, you need a catalytic converter that is functioning properly. When an O2 sensor is malfunctioning, it can trigger the check engine light, and may also lead to problems with the catalytic converter. Problems with a mass airflow sensor can also cause the light to flash on. A bad mass airflow sensor can cause your engine to hesitate during acceleration, and may lead to stalling.
If a faulty battery is causing low voltage at the computer, then it could trigger the check engine light. When you put a new battery in your car, it should work dependably for three to five years. Once the battery enters this timeframe, it's more likely to become problematic.
Failing spark plugs are another problem that can cause the light to illuminate. Cars made in the past twenty years can often go 100,000 miles before needing new plugs. Older automobiles tend to need their plugs replaced more regularly. Malfunctioning ignition coils can also trigger the light. Signs of an ignition coil issue include rough idling, misfiring, and power loss during acceleration.
If you're lucky, all that's causing your check engine light to come on is a loose gas cap. Whenever you fill up, it's important that your gas cap is returned to a tightly secured position. If your cap is loose or missing, fuel could evaporate and your check engine light could get triggered.
