7 Common Problems that Prevent Engines from Starting

When you first notice that your vehicle isn't firing up as easily as it should, you'll want to be proactive about addressing the issue. By delaying, you run the risk of the problem worsening to the extent that your car won't start at all, consequently leaving you stranded. Here are seven common reasons that cars won't start.

Faulty Fuel Pump

Fuel pump problems can prevent gas from properly moving from the tank to the engine. Signs of a fuel pump issue include poor acceleration and sputtering while driving at high speeds.

Bad Starter

A familiar sign of starter trouble is that you turn the key and your engine doesn't start but you do hear a clicking noise. After many years of use, standard wear and tear can cause the starter motor and solenoid to malfunction.

Clogged Fuel Filter

When a fuel filter becomes completely clogged, the engine might not receive the fuel it needs to bring your vehicle roaring to life. You can avoid this problem by getting a new fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles.

Problem with Distributor Cap

When moisture gets under the distributor cap, it can prevent voltage from being properly directed to the spark plugs.

Bad Fuel Injectors

If your fuel injectors are gunked-up, your combustion chamber may be unable to take in the fuel it needs to get your engine started. Pouring a fuel additive into your tank can help with eliminating pollutants from injectors.

Issues with Battery/Charging System

When you put a new battery in your car, it should function dependably for three to five years. But if it dies before this for no clear-cut reason (such as you left your headlights on), then there could be an issue with your alternator.

Failing Ignition Switch

If your ignition switch malfunctions, then the starter solenoid may not receive adequate power. Flickering dash lights are a symptom of an ignition switch problem.
