Cooling System Trouble: 6 Warning Signs
Right after your fire up your car, your engine temperature begins a steady ascent. As long as your cooling system is healthy, you'll have the measures in place to prevent overheating. But if there's an issue with your cooling system, then the excessive heat could lead to major engine damage. As soon as you notice a symptom of cooling system trouble, you'll want to be proactive about addressing it. Here are six signs of cooling system trouble.
Temperature Gauge in the Red Zone
If your dashboard's temperature gauge has risen into the red, then you'll want to pull over when it's safe to do so. Then, you can call up the shop and see if a mechanic is available to help you determine if your car seems like it is safe to drive any further.
If smoke starts billowing out from under your hood, then you'll want to safely get off the road. At that point, you may need to add more coolant/water.
Decreasing Gas Mileage
Automobiles attain the best gas mileage when operating at a healthy temperature. If the engine temperature is hotter than it should be, there's a chance that fuel-efficiency will worsen.
External Coolant Leak
From time to time, you'll want to take a look at the pavement where you usually park and check for evidence of leaking automotive fluids. Externally leaking coolant is often identifiable by its bright color, which is often green, but could be another color such as yellow or pink.
Low Coolant Level
If there's an issue that's causing your coolant level to noticeably drop, then you'll want to have a mechanic diagnose and address the underlying problem. This could mean there's an internal coolant leak present.
White Exhaust Smoke
This is a sign that coolant is indeed leaking internally. The white smoke results from coolant burning up the combustion chamber, which could mean that you're dealing with a problem such as a cracked cylinder head.
