3 Signs of a Transmission Problem
We rely on our cars to an extent that we don't often stop to consciously think about. We go about our daily routine, transporting the kids or getting to work or running to the store, and each of these tasks requires that our cars perform their duty without issue. Even if we have an older model car, we don't stop to think about how, realistically, our car is going to experience mechanical problems at some point in the not-too-distant future. It always feel like an unpleasant surprise when something does go wrong. And while optimism is a great characteristic to have, we still need to be able to acknowledge when something actually is going wrong. And when it comes to your car, recognizing the signs of a problem when they first arise can be the difference between spending a couple hundred dollars and a couple thousand dollars. You need to know the symptoms so that, when they manifest, you can have them addressed before they turn into a full-blown nightmare. One of the systems in your car that will eventually need to be addressed is the transmission. There are several signs that your car is experiencing transmission problems. Here are three of those signs:
If puddles of an artificial liquid substance are showing up in the area where you park your car, this is cause for suspicion. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's the transmission, but that is one possibility. And if the fluid is a red or brownish color, this could be a telltale sign. One way to help you determine whether your transmission fluid is leaking is by keeping an eye on the fluid levels. You may want to add more as needed, but just be sure to keep in mind that overfilling can also have adverse effects.
A burning smell coming from under your hood could mean a number of things, but one potential issue that it could signify is a problem with your transmission. This could mean that your transmission fluid is running too hot, making it difficult for it to do its job, and potentially leading to increased friction, which could lead to significant problems. Again, you'll want to keep an eye on your fluid levels to ensure that you have the adequate supply to be doing the job effectively. And if you happen to be in for an oil change, be sure to have them take a quick look at your fluid levels.
This is where things get serious. If all the sudden your car just pops out of gear for no apparent reason, then that is a classic indicator of a transmission problem. At this point, you'll want to be sure that you get into the shop as soon as possible. When you don't have control over your gears you are no longer able to maintain control over your car, which puts you and other drivers in a hazardous position.
